Top Travel Destinations in Poland

Welcome to my list of the best places to visit in Poland. From the city sights of Krakow and Gdansk to Zakopane in the Mountains, there's so many beautiful places to see!

Here are my top travel destinations and places to visit in Poland:

Warsaw

Warsaw is the capital city of Poland. Situated on the Vistula River in the East of the country, it is also the largest city in Poland. Due to heavy bombing during World War II, many of Warsaw’s buildings have been reconstructed. However, it’s historical Old Town is now a UNESCO World Heritage site - a place filled with pretty cobbled streets and squares.

Now home to modern architecture, Warsaw is also a very green city with over 90 parks! And plenty of history to explore - including the award-winning Museum of the History of Polish Jews and Warsaw's Royal Castle.

There are plenty of cheap, direct flights run from London to Warsaw, taking just under 2 hours and 30 minutes. Making Warsaw an ideal European city destination for a cheap weekend getaway!

Note: Unfortunately there are NO direct flights from London Gatwick; instead fly from London City, Heathrow Stansted or Luton.

Krakow

Located in the south near the Czech Republic border, Krakow is one of the oldest and well-preserved cities in Poland. Sitting on the Vistula River, Poland's longest and largest river, it is also considered one of Europe's most beautiful cities!

Take a couple of days to explore the Old Town, especially around the Main Square and St. Mary's Basilica. And be sure to visit the impressive Wawel Royal Castle, which sits proudly above the town. There are also several day trips you can take from Krakow, including the Wieliczka Salt Mine and nearby concentration camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau.

Many budget airlines offer direct flights from London to Krakow, at around 2 hours 20 minutes. Another perfect European city-break destination.

Wrocław

Wrocław is Poland’s fourth-largest city and sits in the West of the country. Although it is full of historical sites and beautiful buildings, Wrocław is less touristy than Poland’s other cities. AKA is less busy and cheaper!

Its location on the Oder River means that Wrocław is actually made up of 12 islands, and has over 100 bridges! Be sure to check out the cobblestone Market Square and Cathedral Island, as well as the long list of riverside parks.

Cheap direct flights are available from London Stansted or Luton to Wrocław - with the flight time taking just 2 hours!

Note: Unfortunately Gatwick and Heathrow currently don’t fly to Wrocław.

Gdansk

Situated in the north of Poland by the Baltic coast, Gdansk is traditionally Poland’s main port. As well as being a centre for the world trade of Amber, this beautiful city is full of historical attractions! Start by exploring the cobbled streets of the Old Town around the market place of Długi Targ.

Gdansk is also famous for its deep historical connection to World War II (WWII). It was in the Bay of Gdansk where one of the first battles in Germany’s invasion of Poland took place, therefore marking the start of WWII. The city centre of Gdansk was badly damaged during the war and had to be reconstructed.

Make sure you visit the newly opened Museum of the Second World War when visiting Gdansk! You can easily spend a couple of hours in this museum, soaking up all the fascinating historical facts and information.

Nearby is the seaside town of Sopot. At only a 30 minute drive away, it's ideal for a day trip from Gdansk - Go take in that fresh Baltic sea air!

Direct flights to Gdansk are available from London Gatwick, as well as Luton and Stansted, and takes just 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Tip: As well as the short flight time from the UK, Gdansk’s compact city centre makes it an ideal destination for a weekend away in Europe.

Zakopane

Head to Zakopane in the mountains for outdoor activities and some time in the countryside. This popular resort town is located at the base of the Tatras Mountains in southern Poland, near the border of Slovakia.

Known as "the winter capital of Poland”, Zakopane offers a range of winter sports - from skiing and snowboarding to sleigh rides. And when it's wooden chalets are covered in snow, it really is picture-perfect.

In summer, travel to Zakopane for a range of outdoor activities - from mountaineering and hiking to climbing and cycling.

Note: There is no airport here. Instead fly to Krakow and then get a bus to Zakopane - It’s approximately a 2 hour drive!
