Travel to and around Poland
Flying to Poland
There are several major airports in Poland, including those in Warsaw, Krakow, Wrocław, and Gdansk. With the flight time from London to Poland at just 2 hours and 30 minutes on average, it is an ideal country for a short European break!
Public Transport
Think about your carbon footprint and take the more environmentally-friendly route of travel. Using public transport can be slower, but sometimes it's nice to take a proper break from the hectic 9-5. I would definitely recommend using public transport for a city break in Poland...
Travel by Train and Rail
Traveling around Poland? Why not take the train whilst also enjoying the country's scenery.
InterRail (for European citizens or residents) If you want to travel to Poland by train, then look at getting the Interrail Poland Pass. This includes unlimited travel by train in Poland for either 3, 4, 5, 6, or 8 non-consecutive days of your choice, within 1 month.
An adult ticket (28 years +) for 3 days within 1 month is only €59!
If you're looking to travel across Europe by train, then opt for the Global Pass which provides train travel in 33 countries across Europe, including Poland.
EURail (for non-European citizens or residents) EURail is essentially the same as InterRail but is for non-European citizens or residents. It also offers both Poland and Global Pass.
Polish Railway - There are a few different train services in Poland, including POLREGIO and InterCity. Therefore visit rozklad-pkp.pl website to view all the Polish railway timetables online.
Travel by Bus
Traveling by bus in Poland can be more convenient than trains for short journeys, and be a lot cheaper!
Shorter local bus routes - tickets can normally be purchased from the driver.
Longer bus routes between main cities - I would recommend using FlixBus. Visit their website for more information and to buy advance tickets online.
Cross-country coach journeys - both Eurolines and FlixBus offer advance booking online - Albeit direct journeys from other European countries may not be available, and will probably include a change or two!
Travel by Boat
Although Poland has a long coastline there, unfortunately, isn't a direct ferry from the UK to Poland. Instead, there are passenger ferry routes between Poland and Scandinavian countries, such as Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland.
For the many rivers and canals through Poland, there are passenger-boat services that operate in the summer.

Driving Poland
If you are looking to do a European road trip through Poland, or just wanting to have a car to be able to explore the Polish countryside, then here are my top tips for driving in Poland:
- The UK to Poland - Due to the fast and well-maintained motorways in central Europe, the drive from the UK to the Polish border takes only approx. 13 hours, with a distance of around 800 miles. Although I wouldn't drive it in one hit! Instead, break it up and stop off in Belgium and Germany on your way.
Remember: You must have either a nationality number plate or a sticker displayed on the back of your vehicle, when driving in Europe.
Note: Motorcycles, cars and trucks up to 7,5 tons can use motorways in Germany for free.
- Polish Roads - The road conditions here aren't up to other European standards, such as in France and Germany. As there are still lots of road upgrades taking place across Poland. If you can, use the Polish motorways (autostrady) to get around rather than the smaller roads.
- Tolls - Parts of Poland's motorways are toll roads, where you collect a ticket and then pay at the end of the section. More info on toll charges available here.
- Hiring a car in Poland - If you're flying to Poland but would still like to explore by car, then you can easily hire a car here. All major car rental companies operate in Poland, with cars available from major airports or cities, such as Warclaw and Krakow.
Note: You will have to be atleast 21 or 23 years old (depending on the rental company) to be able to hire a car.
Visiting Poland - Overview
If you're looking for a short city break destination in Europe, then head to Poland to explore it's historic, pretty towns and cities!
- If you're looking for a European city break destination then Krakow should be top on your list! Otherwise, head to Gdansk for a cheap, short weekend away.
- Visit Poland either in Spring or Autumn, to avoid the high season of summer and bitterly cold days of winter.
-
Try some of Poland's traditional cuisine - I would definitely recommend some Pierogi and Polish Doughnuts - Pączki.
- Spend 10 days traveling by train with an InterRail/EURail Poland Pass, whilst visiting my top Polish travel destinations.
