What to eat and drink in Poland?

I love food - I’m constantly thinking about what I’m going to eat next!

Firstly - what food is Poland famous for?

Poland is the home of the potatoes - with traditional meals consisting of meat, cabbage and guess what - yes. Potatoes. Just remember to not judge a book by it's cover... the dishes here can look simple but be delicious!

So, what to eat when in Poland? Here are the top Polish dishes I would recommend you to try:

Pierogi

These polish dumplings are filled with a range of different stuffings; from meat and cabbage to mushrooms and spinach. They are served either boiled, baked, or fried... My favourite is fried pierogi!

Note: If you only end up trying one Polish dish, Pierogi is the one I would recommend the most!

Gołąbki (Polish Cabbage rolls)

Gołąbki is essentially a mix of minced pork or beef, chopped onions, and rice or barley, wrapped in boiled cabbage leaves. It is traditionally served with either a tomato or mushroom sauce…. And is surprisingly tasty!

Bigos (Polish Stew)

Also known as Hunter's stew, Bigos is considered the national dish of Poland. The stew is made with meat from pork, rabbit or venison, but traditionally should always include spicy Polish sausage! It is served hot either as a starter with bread or as a main for dinner with potatoes.

Golonka (Polish Pork Hock)

This dish of pork hock (pork knuckle) is usually slow-cooked until tender and served whole on the bone. In a typical Polish style, it is served with some sort of potato and cabbage.

I have to admit that I wasn't initially drawn to trying this Polish dish, but it was actually amazing - The meat was so tender and just fell off the bone!

Kotlet Schabowy

This is the Polish version of a breaded pork cutlet and is quite similar to the Viennese schnitzel. You'll normally find it served with mashed potatoes, cooked vegetables, salad, or coleslaw.

Zapiekanka (Polish pizza)

Zapiekanka is Poland’s version of fast food. This popular street food is essentially half a baguette open and topped with cheese, mushrooms, and other ingredients. Then toasted and normally served hot with ketchup. It is the perfect snack for after a night out!

Pączki (Polish Doughnuts)

These traditional Polish doughnuts are made with a sweet dough, so tend to be richer and denser than normal doughnuts. Pączki are always filled with something sweet such as jam, custard, lemon curd or chocolate and then covered with sugar... I tried some in Krakow and it was the biggest doughnut I’ve ever seen!

What to drink in Poland?

Other than the classic soft drinks and iconic cocktails, these are the traditional Polish alcoholic beverages:

  • Vodka - Considered the national drink of Poland is vodka! With hundreds of brands of vodka available in Poland, it can be really cheap to buy here. The most famous brand of Polish vodka internationally is probably Belvedere Vodka, as well as being one of the most expensive.
  • Beer - Alike the rest of central Europe, beer is a popular beverage. The most popular Polish beers are Żywiec, Okocim, and Tyskie.

Tip: Try a cold beer with a shot of raspberry syrup - a popular choice in the summer!

Can I drink the tap water in Poland?

Yes, the tap water in Poland is officially safe to drink. Although you don’t often see local people drink the tap water here, as they tend to drink either filtered or bottled water.
