Weather in Spain

Looking to visit Spain but not sure when to visit? Here is my top info on the weather in Spain and the best times to travel here.

The Spanish climate and when to visit Spain

Spain is generally viewed as one of the warmest countries in Europe and has a Mediterranean climate. But as the fourth largest country in Europe, the weather and temperature vary across regions due to the terrain and altitude.

Therefore the best time to visit Spain depends on the area:

  • Northern Spain (i.e. along the Cantabrian coast) - This region of Spain is notorious for its mild winters and cool summers (max 25º C), however, the weather can be unpredictable at times due to the surrounding mountains. The most popular time to visit northern Spain is during the summer months of July and August.
  • Central Spain - Central Spain is generally mild but has hot, dry summers. Therefore the best time to visit here is late Spring (April/May) or early Autumn (September/October).
  • Southern Spain - Southern Spain gets particularly warm in the summer months, with the tourist high season running from June through to August. Instead, visit southern Spain in May or September for milder but still warm weather... and without the summer crowds!
  • Canary Islands - Located on the north African coast, the Canary Islands have a mild climate with an annual average temperate of 22ºC. The tourist high season here is through winter into Spring (December – April) for those winter sun-seekers, and the summer months of  July and August.

For higher areas in Spain, such as the Pyrenees, Sierra Nevada, Iberian, Cantabrian, and Central mountains, the climate is cooler with snowfall during winter through to the end of Spring.
