Austria at a Glance

If you're thinking about visiting Austria, here are my key things you should know...

Austria is a land-locked country in Central Europe bordered by Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic. The terrain is varied - from highly mountainous areas to rolling alpine hill regions.

But don't think this country is only made for winter skiing. Instead, head here in the summer to hike, cycle, swim, or just relax in the beautiful outdoors. It's the perfect place for nature lovers!

Note: If you're looking for a beach holiday by the sea, then Austria is probably not the place for you.

Top Travel Information

Here's all my other top travel information for Austria:

  • Currency: EURO (€) - Austria is in the EU and its currency is the Euro, making it easy if you're traveling across other European countries like Belgium and Germany.
  • Plug Adapters: The plugs in Austria are the 2-pin system alike most of central Europe. If traveling here from the UK then remember your plug adapters!
  • Visas: Visas are not required by any EU/EEA nationals, regardless of the purpose or length of stay. Australian, Canadian and US nationals can stay for up to 90 days without a visa. If traveling to Austria from outside Europe then check your visa requirements with your embassy. More information on visa requirements for visiting Austria here.
  • Sunday Shopping: Alike a lot of central Europe, most supermarkets and shops in Austria are closed on Sundays as well as on public holidays. So remember to buy any food you may need on Saturday instead.
