What to eat and drink in Croatia?
Wondering what the traditional Croatian cuisine is? Or what you should eat and drink in Croatia?
Here is my top list of food and drink to try whilst in Croatia.
As a food lover, what and where to eat is always the first thing on my mind when traveling.
So. What food is Croatia famous for?
I would say that Croatian cuisine is a mix of Italian and Mediterranean food. Due to its geographical location across from Italy and not far north from Greece, it's easy to see why the food here has a similar feel.
Here are some of the most famous dishes I would recommend you to try:
Ćevapčići
Grilled dish of small, rolled pieces of minced beef, lamb or pork, seasoned with paprika and garlic. They're a bit like spicy sausage. It's a popular street food dish, although it can be found as a main meal served with potatoes.
Ražnjići
This popular dish is made of small chunks of pork, marinated and then grilled on a skewer. It's a bit like a meat kebab and is traditionally served with grilled vegetables and rice.
Burek
Burek is a traditional Croatian breakfast item for farmers and fishermen. It's essentially a pastry stuffed with ground meat, spinach, or cheese.
Crni Rižot - Black Risotto
The Croatian dish of black risotto is mainly found on the Adriatic coastline. Made with squid or cuttlefish, it is the squid ink that gives the black colour and delicious seafood flavour!
Janjetina - Whole Roast Lamb
This popular Dalmatian dish is basically a spit-roasted whole lamb. We tried this when traveling around on Brac Island, and it was delicious!
Ice cream
Ice cream parlors are open late in the summer months here in Croatia, and a homemade gelato is just perfect for an after-dinner dessert!
Traditional lamb and grilled vegetables
Croatian Icecream
Ožujsko beer
What to drink in Croatia?
Alike the rest of central Europe, beer is a popular beverage - The most popular Croatian beers are Ozujsko, Pan, and Karlovacko.
Other than beer, the traditional drink here is Rakia, a type of fruit brandy. You're likely to come across varying flavours of Rakia, from plum to pear or grape!
Can I drink the tap water in Croatia?
YES. The tap water in Croatia is completely safe to drink, and is considered to be some of the cleanest in the world! Split is home to some of the best water in terms of quality in Croatia.
Visiting Croatia - Overview
Head to Croatia for either a European city break or, explore just some of the 1,200 islands along its coastline!
