Brac Island is located just off the Croatian coast from Split. And as one of the largest islands in Croatia, there's definitely plenty to do and see here!

It's most well known for its white-pebble beach Zlatni Rat, located just outside of the town Bol, as well as being home to Vidova Gora mountain.

The Hiking Trail:

  • The Vidova Gora hiking trail begins on the northern edge of Bol town - you can simply Google 'Vidova Gora Trail Head' if you can't find it.
  • Follow the 'Vidova Gora' signs up the track road, past the small church of Sveti Josip, and on via the stone quarry.
  • As you continue on, follow the red and white marks painted along the trail at regular points.

Note: The ground on some of the trail can be quite loose with lots of stone. So just be careful when walking.

  • The trail leads you up onto the mountain ridge but this is not the official summit of Vidova Gora mountain! From here it's about another 15 - 20-minute walk to the summit.

Tip: If you look West then you should see some pylons further along the ridge - that is the summit of Vidova Gora.

  • Continue to follow the red and white markers along the mountain ridge, all whilst enjoying the stunning views.
  • You'll eventually reach the car park for visiting the Vidova Gora mountain by road.

Note: There's a small shack in the car park which serves snacks and light refreshments. Unfortunately it was closed we visited, so remember to take some food and drink with you.

  • Once at the summit, there are several spots with picnic tables where you can sit and enjoy the views... Below you will be able to see Bol town and Zlatni Rat beach, and on a clear day, you should be able to see across to Hvar Island!

We spent about an hour at the summit to take photos and just have a bit of a break, before starting the walk back down.

Top Tips for hiking Vidova Gora Mountain:

  • Stay in BolWhen visiting Brac island stay in the seaside town of Bol for at least one night. From Bol, you will be able to easily hike Vidova Gora mountain.
  • Leave early in the morning, especially if visiting in summer - Leave super early in order to hike most of the mountain before the sun fully rises, to avoid the midday heat. We hiked in the summer so left off from Bol town at 6 am.
  • Wear sturdy shoes - It's a moderate hike so hiking boots aren't necessary to wear but be sure to wear sturdy shoes, i.e. not flip-flops! I wore a pair of sports trainers which were perfectly fine.
  • Take plenty of water with you - As with any walk or hike it's super important to always have a supply of water with you. As this hike took around 3-5 hours, we took 2 large 1.5l bottles of water with us. Also, take some snacks to enjoy at the summit to reboot your energy levels before the walk back down.
  • Enjoy an afternoon on Zlatni Rat beach - After a morning hike up Vidova Gora mountain, why not enjoy a relaxing afternoon on Zlatni Rat beach!? There are plenty of beach bars and restaurants there too.

Conclusion

Hiking Vidova Gora Mountain on Brac Island, Croatia, has to definitely be one of my top travel memories...

I would definitely recommend visiting the Vidova Gora mountain. The early morning hike was my favourite holiday moment when visiting Brac Island, as the 3-hour walk just made the incredible views SO worth it!

Just remember to leave really early in the morning. As mentioned above, we left at about 6 am which allowed us to do most of the hike in the cool before the sun properly rose.

On our way back down the mountain, we saw people only just starting off the hike from Bol town. That was at about 11.30 am - please do not hike up a mountain during the hottest part of the day in the midday sun!

If you or someone in your travel group is not up for the hike then I take the drive up to the summit, just so you don't miss out on the views from the top.
