About Chapman's Pool
There are so many famous and popular spots along the Jurassic coastline of Dorset - Old Harry Rocks, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door to name a few!
But today I want to share one of my favourite hidden gems - Chapman’s Pool.
Located near Worth Matravers on the Isle of Purbeck, it is just along the coast from Swanage and a 15 minute drive south from Corfe castle.
This remote small cove is only accessible to the public by foot. And due to the good 30 minute walk here, it means the beach remains fairly quiet even during the summer peak season!
What is at Chapman’s Pool
Chapman’s Pool is home to stony beach and crystal clear waters. Due to the horseshoe shape of the cove, the sea is usually very calm here - making it ideal for swimming and snorkelling.
Note: There is no lifeguard service at Chapman’s Pool.
Tip: Take some snacks or a picnic with you as there are no facilities at the beach
In the nearby village of Worth Matravers is the popular country pub The Square & Compass, which serves food.

Chapmans Pool Walk - Directions
The direct walk down to Chapman’s Pool takes about 30 minutes from Renscombe car park. Please note that this route is steep in places.
Tip: Don't forget to allow more time for the walk back uphill to the car park!
There is also an alternative, longer route that's less steep which takes you through the valley.
We did the direct walk down to Chapman's Pool - where you get to enjoy stunning views along the Jurassic coast! And then took the slightly easier, longer walk back uphill to the car park.
Direct Route
For the most direct route:
- From Renscombe car park - follow the path straight across the fields in front of you
- Follow the path and steps downhill towards the cove
- At the end of the path you'll reach a dirt track - take the left turn
- Continue down the track until you reach the south end of the beach
You can then simply retrace your steps back up to the car park - or follow the longer route for a less steep walk back
Tip: Remember to wear a good pair of sturdy shoes or walking boots as it's a very steep path down to Chapman’s cove.
Alternative Longer Route
For the alternative, longer route that's less steep which takes you through the valley, from the car park:
- Follow the track road back to Renscombe Road
- Turn left on the bend and follow the road downhill
- At the bottom of the hill (before reaching a set of farm houses) take a left turn down a dirt track
- Continue to follow the dirt track all the way down to the cove beach
You can then retrace your steps back up the car park.
If you took the direct route downhill but want to opt for the slightly easier route back, from the beach:
- Follow the dirt track back uphill to wear you meet the steep path
- Continue to follow the dirt track until you reach a small road
- Take a right turn and follow the road uphill until you reach the houses at Runscombe
- Continue to follow Runscombe road to the sharp bend, and then take a right turn back down the track to the car park
