Camera Base
Sony A7iii
Cost - £1,700 - NEW // around £1,200 - second hand
There are of course a crazy amount of amazing cameras out on the market, but we have the Sony A7iii. It's known to be one of the best mirrorless cameras on the market and best value for money. But we're going to run through exactly why we love it!
Pros...
- Good for filming as well as photography
- Super quick, sharp focus- when paired with the right lens
- Small and compact
- Mirrorless camera - which means improved auto focus and faster burst speed (can take more photos in a short period of time)
- 24.2 megapixel full frame sensor - which means better low light and provides true representation of your lens length, so if you’re doing wide angle shots then you’ll essentially be able to fit more in
- Full frame 4k movie recording - great for filming and creating videos
- 5 axis image stabilization - so you can film hand-held if needed to
- 10 frames per second of continuous shooting
There are of course lots of other great options for camera body, for example the Panasonic GH5 range is another good option for a similar price range.
However if you do have a bigger budget then the Sony A7Siii is worth checking out. Although it does come with a hefty price tag of £3,800 - double the price of the Sony A7iii.
Camera Lenses
We have the following two camera lenses.
1. Sigma Art 24mm - 70mm 2.8 lens
Cost - approx. £1,000 - NEW
This all rounder lens is an absolute beast! Although it is quite heavy due to the amount of glass in the lens, there are lots of pros...
- The speed of it focusing is second to none, resulting in super sharp images
- For a general lens to take photos and film, having the 2.8 aperture is all the bokeh that you’ll need!
Bokeh = this is the blurry foreground and background for that cinematic look
- It has a direct e-mount for the Sony camera system
We looked at Sony lenses but from research we found that Sigma was better than the Sony equivalent and a lot cheaper...
As much as we love our Sigma Art 24mm - 70mm 2.8 lens, unfortunately Sigma currently don't offer a 70-200mm lens.
Therefore we opted for Sony's version...
2. Sony 70-20mm f4 lens
Cost - approx. £1,000 - NEW
This lens is used less frequently and mainly just for shots when we need a higher zoom ability, such as when shooting wildlife.
Other items
- Currently on our wish list is the Sigma Art 14-24mm 2.8 lens - ultimate lens for shooting wide angles and scenic landscapes. Cost is approx. £1,300 - NEW
- We always photograph with our circular polarising filter from Hoya. This is to remove reflections and enhance colour!
GoPro
GoPro Hero 8
Cost - approx. £280 - NEW (camera only)
We have to admit, the GoPro Hero 8 really is incredible! And so here's exactly why we love it so much.
Pros...
- Great stabilisation for video
- Takes 12 megapixel photos
- Films in 4k and at 60 frames per second
- The camera itself is waterproof - meaning no need for it to be in waterproof case!
If you’ve got an extra £100 to spend, then opt for the GoPro Hero 9 at which costs around £380. The Hero 9 films in 5k and also has a front screen for those cheeky selfies. As well as a few other software upgrades!
GoPro Accessories
There are so many great accessories for the GoPro cameras, but some of our favourites are...
- Chest Mount
- Suction cup mounts - great for filming from the van when we're on the road!
- Selfie Stick
- Floating Hand Grip Mount - perfect for any water sports or snorkelling
And our main must have for our GoPro is extra batteries!!! We found that the rechargeable battery that came with our GoPro can last for approx. 1 hour 30 mins when filming constantly in 4k. As we do a lot of filming with our GoPro, we bought some additional batteries from TELESIN - opting for the triple charging box and two rechargeable Lithium-ion batteries combi-set.
Drone
DJI Mavic 2 Pro
Cost - approx. £1,350 - NEW (drone only)
After our main camera base, our drone has to our next favourite item from our travel camera gear!
But why do we love the DJI Mavic 2 Pro? Here's just a few reasons why...
- 3 axis gimbal built-in - this results in better stabilisation of the drone camera
- Hasselblad camera with a f 2.8 28mm lens - capable of capturing 4k video and 20 megapixel images!!!
- Great battery life - which means longer flying time!
- Really user-friendly app for your phone to control the drone from
- Plus the drone folds up into a really compact size - meaning it's super easy to travel with!
We also have DJI Mavic 2 Fly More Kit, which includes two extra batteries, extra propellers, charging dock, car charger, plus a nifty bag to store your drone and accessories in. This is approx. £280 new.
Camera Gimbal
DJI Ronin RS 2 Pro Combo
Cost - £840 - NEW
If you want to do lots of filming, then a gimbal is a great piece of kit to help with the stabilisation of your camera. We currently have the DJI Ronin M (an old model) which allows us to capture smooth film footage with our Sony camera.
Other reasons we love our gimbal is...
- It can take up to 3.6kg payload - which is plenty of weight to hold the mirrorless camera and lens
- Through using the app on your phone, you can set it up to do panoramas, time lapse, motion lapse and motion control!
Although we do now have our eyes on the new Ronin RS 2 model, which is more compact than the Ronin-M - perfect for when we're travelling around!
Camera Tripod
Peak Design Travel Tripod (Aluminium)
Cost - £315 - NEW
Our next favourite item from our travel camera gear has to be our tripod from Peak Design. We opted for the aluminium one which is their cheaper tripod available. However if you do have some extra spare cash then we would definitely recommend checking out their travel tripod in carbon fiber - it's ultra light design comes in at around £540!
Peak Design travel tripod in aluminium - Pros...
- For it's size and capability it is super light weight
- It has a super sleek design with no wasted space when compacted down - ideal for travelling!
- Packs down to the diameter of a water bottle!!! Crazy I know!
- There's a quick release plate for attaching/detaching the camera
- Super easy to move the camera when attached
- Also has a phone mount
Backpack
LowePro Pro Tactic BP450 AW2
Cost - £186 - NEW
After years of searching for the best backpack for our travel camera gear, this backpack offers everything we need! And here is exactly why we love the Lowepro ProTactic backpack...
- A modular internal design allowing for different size lenses, batteries, chargers, filters, and even our drone!
- Includes a padded laptop sleeve - perfect for keeping our MacBook safe!
- Comes with a waterproof cover - ideal for our outdoor adventures

- Superior padding meaning it's extra comfy to carry
- A crazy endless number of pockets!
- Plus lots of external loops so we can strap on our tripod
Other Camera Accessories
Some of our other pieces of travel camera gear and accessories include...
- Peak Design camera clip - £57 - An external clip which we added to our backpack to easily clip on and off our camera
- Rode Video Microphone - £148 - This microphone attaches to our Sony camera allowing us to capture clear sound when we're filming
- SanDisk Extreme Portable Hard Drive - from £150 - perfect for storing all of our photos and videos. We opted for the 2TB one for that extra bit of storage and speed!
